Gem lake isn't exactly a 5 star destination in the winter, but the hike itself is amazing. Most of this hikes elevation is in the beginning and then there are other trails off this one so make sure to follow the signs to Sprague lake. I recommend using the Y-Camp trail from the livery around Emerald Mountain rather than Rainbow Dr. as there is private property at the end of Rainbow Dr. Moose cow and baby in the lake. No snowshoes needed but micro spikes are quite helpful due to icy conditions on most of the trail. Overall a great day trip without having to reserve into RMNP. Catch and keep fishing is allowed at Sprauge with a valid fishing license, be sure you know the limits of each fish as they do vary.
