The ride down the trail back to Jersey Shore on day 2 was much easier. Built on the former Jersey Shore, Pine Creek and Buffalo Railroad the trail runs through Tioga and Lycoming Counties. Saw a bear. This town is like a trip back in time, very friendly people, nobody in a hurry, little shops, and beautiful gas street lamps lining the entire main street. I rode a gravel bike with 32mm tubeless tires which was the petfect choice for the unpaved trail. And there he was a black timber rattler. The bigger issue was remembering the route out of town back to the Trail Head since there are a few turns along the way. 287 north to Morris and Wellsboro, or the most scenic drive, rt. These do limit your average speed if you are projecting your arrival time. We had trail bars in our room. I started in Jersey Shore to a point between Slate Run and Cedar Run. Rode from rattlesnake rock parking area to Turkey path, just shy of 15 miles and then back to rattlesnake rock. Just sayin. We had rain jackets with us, which helped. Unfortunately, we live 30 minutes from the Pine Creek Trail making it our home trail. Big birds, rabbits, chipmunks, deer, ducks, snakes and one bear. We didn't see any wildlife today really, but there were so many people, out, that was not too surprising. If you ride this trail you will think you are truly in God's country, which is one of the reasons why there isn't anywhere to eat at Ansonia. It is very flat, and you can expect to pedal most of the time. We started out at the Ansonia trailhead, where we left our car. Not many interesting features, such as bridges and tunnels like the GAP trail - more of a bucolic meandering along a river bank. I've ridden some parts of it on the sections around Waterville and south. The grade by itself wasn't that big a deal but on May 1 there was a 10-17 MPH wind in the face the entire way. Sitting 17.2 miles south of the Ansonia Access Area, the Blackwell Access Area is a great place to end your bike ride on the Pine Creek Rail Trail. This roadway gives access to the western banks of the creek for some beautiful cabins, fishermen, and those wanting to visit the seasonal Chimney Hollow Falls. Wellsboro, Pa. - The Pine Creek Rail Trail will be closed between Rattlesnake Rock and Tiadaghton Campground due to trail resurfacing, according to the Tioga State Forest. If water levels are high, this creek is impressive as it cascades 75 feet or so down the hillside. No one can over-emphasize how great this trail is, so check it out if you can. The wildlife is unreal, bald eagles, osprey diving down to grab trout out of the creek, deer, black bear, river otters, large variety of birds and plenty of timber rattlers. And, if you're real lucky, you may ride past a timber rattler sunning itself along the trail as some of my friends once did.
